The Interior Design Themes Trending This Autumn

Interest in décor that is old and bold is skyrocketing, according to social media platform Pinterest.

With 578 million active users, Pinterest certainly has plenty of data to draw on to help it predict changing moods and future trends.

In its latest Autumn Trends report, the social media platform identified five interior décor themes to watch out for.

How many do you already have in your home?

Thrifted home décor

Following on from the popularity of second-hand and vintage clothing, there’s been a massive surge of interest in unique, pre-loved furniture.

Demand is strongest among hard-up, environmentally conscious Gen Z Pinterest users (18- to 24-year-olds). Among this demographic, searches for ‘dream thrift finds’ have jumped by 550% in recent months.

It seems vintage armchairs, dressers, mirrors and lamps – much like the sort your grandmother had – are just the ticket.

Rustic farmhouse

It’s not just old furniture that’s in fashion. Items that wouldn’t look out of place in a cosy log cabin or prairie farmhouse are also proving popular.

The report says searches for ‘farmhouse cottage interiors’ are up by 370%, while the term ‘rustic retreats’ is up by 172%.

Think heavy wooden tables, wood-fired stoves, crochet blankets and floral prints.

Slick home offices

Working from home has never looked so good – well, at least on social media, where there’s not a pile of papers or dirty coffee cup in sight.

Pinterest reports a massive rise in searches for ‘work office makeovers’ (up 2,652%) and ‘chic cubicle décor’ (up 1,543%).

This trend centres around home offices with uncluttered desks, verdant indoor plants, tasteful prints, quirky lamps and nifty storage solutions.

Statement tiles

Whether it’s in the bathroom or kitchen, statement tiles are enjoying a moment (searches for ‘standout tiles’ have increased by 450%).

This trend incorporates detailed mosaics and highly patterned or textured tiles – the more ornate, eye-catching and original the better.

Art deco

The sleek aesthetic associated with the 1920s and 1930s is proving a hit, with searches for ‘art deco décor interiors’ up by 745%.

Glass, chrome and lacquered wood all feature in this trend alongside geometric patterns and velvet cushions.

The slightly baffling search term ‘1980s art deco’ is also trending. If you’re wondering what this is, picture Miami Vice-style art deco knockoffs in pastel colours.
