Making London Greener: Steps Towards a Sustainable Community

Steps to Make Your Area More Environmentally Sustainable

Throughout August we are running our Community Cheerleader campaign.

It's where we shout from the rooftops (and blog posts) about the importance of supporting our neighbourhood together.

Here's part four of our five-part series, which looks at how we can all take steps to improve the natural environment in our neighbourhood.

By making conscious choices and being proactive, we can reduce our environmental impact and encourage sustainability at a local level.

Here are some simple ways to make our communities greener and more sustainable.

1. Promote Recycling and Reduce Waste
Recycle as much as possible. We've heard about some of our area's younger residents who help older neighbours recycle successfully.
Reducing single-use plastics and using alternatives like reusable bags, bottles and containers is also a step in the right direction.

2. Support Sustainable Transportation
Get moving by walking and cycling when you can, and consider public transport if you're not already using it.
Carpooling and ride-sharing reduce the number of vehicles on the road and are often a more fun and social way to travel.

3. Increase Green Spaces and Biodiversity
Whenever possible, try to plant native shrubs and flowers.
A grander idea is to create a community garden where residents get together and grow fruits and vegetables, promoting sustainable food production and stronger community ties.
You can also support initiatives to protect wildlife and their habitats. Consider creating wildlife corridors and installing bird boxes, bat houses and insect hotels in your back garden

4. Be a Sustainable Practices Champion
Seek out and buy from local businesses that follow sustainable practices. Supporting farmers' markets, local artisans and eco-friendly shops is an excellent way to do this.
You could also consider organising events and campaigns to raise awareness about local environmental issues and sustainable practices. Perhaps go the extra mile and provide educational resources to help residents make eco-friendly choices.

And Finally …..
We can all positively impact our environment by promoting recycling, supporting sustainable transportation, increasing green spaces, embracing renewable energy, and championing sustainable practices.
Here's to being a Community Cheerleader and making our neighbourhoods greener and more sustainable.
